WHO DESIGNED THE T-SHIRT YOU WEAR?

In 1904, the Cooper Underwear Company ran a magazine ad announcing a new product for bachelors. In the “before” photo, a man averts his eyes from the camera as if embarrassed; he has lost all the buttons on his undershirt and has safety-pinned its flaps together. In the “after” photo, a virile gentleman sports a handlebar mustache, smokes a cigar and wears a “bachelor undershirt” stretchy enough to be pulled over the head. “No safety pins — no buttons — no needle — no thread,” ran the slogan aimed at men with no wives and no sewing skills. Someone in the U.S. Navy must have seen the logic in this, because the following year, the quartermaster’s office specified that sailors should wear undershirts with no buttons under their uniforms; soon thousands of men became acquainted with the comfort of the cotton pullover. 

Though the Cooper Underwear Company popularized the crew-neck shirt, they did not invent the style. The shirts evolved out of the long johns that men wore in the 19th century, when a number of garment makers experimented with methods that would allow the fabric to stretch over the head and then snap back into shape.

In the 1890s, the cotton pullover still looked like underwear to most people and wearing it in public was considered scandalous. Lawmakers in Havana went so far as to ban the public display of any underwearlike top, and so laborers had to toil in the heat wearing long-sleeve shirts with buttons.

But gradually, the crew-neck caught on. In 1920, the garment was reborn under another name, thanks partly to F. Scott Fitzgerald. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the author was the first to use the word “T-shirt” in print; it appears in the novel “This Side of Paradise,” in a list of accouterments that a character carries with him to boarding school. Fitzgerald seems to have assumed that the idea of a “T-shirt” (so named, presumably, because of the shirt’s shape) would be familiar to readers and that they would associate it with the “white-flannelled, bareheaded youths” of New England prep schools.

By the 1940s, T-shirts had become ubiquitous in high schools. A newspaper columnist named Nancy Pepper wrote that teenagers owned closets full of T-shirts and customized them with sew-on patches and fringe. She reported that some high-school boys even used their T-shirts to advertise that they were available for make-out sessions; around the necklines of their shirts, the boys inscribed the words, “Neck here.”

2000+ condoms for free distribution to students

A plan to promote safe sex to university students in Fredericton proved to be full of holes.

Officials at the University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University are now telling students to throw out free condoms that were given away during a welcoming event for students on Monday night.

That warning comes after some students reported their condom package had been punctured by a staple.

The Fredericton Sexual Assault Crisis Centre's intention was to package the condoms with a message to ask for consent before sexual activity. But Maggie Crain of the centre said the problem happened when that message was attached to the condom's packaging.

"Mistakenly, some of the staples pierced the air pocket that holds the condom," said Crain.

"So you can't consider it sterile, and over time, the air would break down the elasticity of the condom and make it more apt to break in the future."

About 80 of the compromised packages were given out. Crain said the rest of the condoms were thrown out after two students pointed out the damaged packages. Jen Connolly of UNB's Student Union Information Centre said steps were taken to alert students. 

"It's been posted on Facebook, numerous places," she said.

"The poster commented, like 'good to know' - and it is good to know!" A message has also been circulated through university email accounts.

Crain said the sexual crisis centre will package another 2,000 condoms for free distribution to students and include the message to ask for consent. Those messages will now be attached with tape.

15-year-old boy rapes three children, remanded in prison

One of the children was a baby. An Upper Area Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, on Friday remanded a 15-year-old boy in prison custody for the alleged raping of three children.

The accused, who lives in Rafin Kwara Masaka, was charged for allegedly having canal knowledge of two sisters, a six-year-old and a 10-month-old, and another a 8- year-old girl; all in the same house.

The police prosecutor, Joseph Ahua, told the court that the matter was reported by the victims' parents, at Masaka Police Station on September 12.

He said that the accused was arrested and during police investigation, confessed to committing the offence. He said that the offence contravened Section 283 of the Penal Code.

"Whoever has canal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 14 years and shall also be liable tofine,'' the Penal Code reads.

The accused, pleaded not guilty to the charge, and his counsel, R.N. Mbu applied for his bail. The presiding officer, Vincent Gwehemba, however, refused thebail application and ordered the accused to be remanded in prison pending final investigation on the matter. He adjourned the case till October 16 for further hearing.

Sources said since revelations relating to the Moses' bizarre acts two weeks ago, there have been palpable tension in the community where worshippers in his church have been seen standing and whispering. It was gathered that Moses moved into the community from Onitsha where he was allegedly manhandled by a mob after raping a 16-year-old bread hawker.

Moses was arrested after relations of his victims were said to have reported the matter to the Police, following the confessions of the young girls that he had made love to them.

With news cameras flashing, adult film performer Cameron Bay told reporters that in her last porn shoot before testing positive for HIV, her partner’s penis was bleeding — and he wasn’t wearing a condom.

Bay, whose positive HIV test sparked the first of two porn moratoriums in the last month, spoke Wednesday at a Hollywood press conference with other adult film performers, including two who said they also contracted HIV this year. The press conference was coordinated by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which advocates for mandatory condom use in porn.

Five current and former porn performers spoke about the dangers and uncertainty of life in the adult film industry. While the performers said they can’t be sure when and where they contracted HIV, they agreed the industry is not adequately protecting its performers.

Choking back tears, Bay continued to describe her last shoot, filmed at a public bar in San Francisco for Kink.com.

“There were up to 50 people in the room with us. And we were laying on top of them. And they were touching inappropriately,” Bay said. “It all happened so fast. I didn’t realize how unsafe it was until I saw the pictures … You’re on a whole other level when you’re doing something so extreme.”

Last week, Bay revealed that condoms were available, but not required at the shoot. She said she didn’t think she needed to use a condom because her male costar had recently tested negative for sexually transmitted diseases, and she left the choice up to him. Kink.com confirmed to HuffPost that Bay was offered a condom, but it was not used.

Porn performer Patrick Stone told reporters he was asked to perform in a shoot even after he tested positive for HIV. He said he was told he was HIV-positive in an email on Sept. 10 from Performer Availability Screening Services, which handles STD testing for the industry. Stone said he never got a follow-up call or email from PASS, or from his employer Kink.com, to discuss the results or schedule follow-up testing. Instead, he got an email from Kink.com two days later inquiring about scheduling a shoot this week, he said.

Since then, Stone has taken two additional tests that he said show him as HIV-negative. He said he’s awaiting results from a fourth and final test.

“It’s been kind of a whirlwind week for me emotionally,” Stone said. “I feel that the testing process for PASS is not working. If I was allowed to fall through the cracks like I did, who else is out there?

“I mean, they had me scheduled for a shoot tomorrow and as far as they knew, I was HIV-positive,” Stone said.

Kink.com said that it did not know about Stone’s positive HIV test when it scheduled him for the shoot.

“He had tested negative for us previously. Because of the moratorium, tests were not updated on the PASS system for producers (because no one was cleared for work),” Mike Stabile, spokesman for Kink.com, said in an email to HuffPost. “He would have been required [to take] a new test regardless before shooting.”

Another man who identified himself as a porn performer joined the press conference by phone, saying he wanted to remain anonymous. He claimed to have contracted HIV working in the industry and tested positive in the last six months. That would make him the third performer to test positive for the virus this year.

About two weeks after a shoot, he said he developed acute symptoms and tested positive. He said he had tested negative for HIV two weeks earlier.

A fourth performer, Rod Daily, said he learned he was HIV-positive earlier this month. Daily, who has been in a romantic relationship with Cameron Bay for about two years, has performed in gay porn since 2005 and said he always used condoms.

“That’s 12 years that I’ve shot with HIV-positive people, used condoms and never been HIV-positive,” Daily said. “If anything, I know that condoms do work. I was a guinea pig for that.

“I just don’t know how an industry stands here and says they care so much about their performers and, a week after someone tests positive, they’re out there shooting without condoms,” Daily said. “Ultimately, it’s a business, and their main concern is money and not their performers.”

Daily thanked the AIDS Healthcare Foundation “for everything they’ve done,” including helping him and Bay get medication.

Former performer Derrick Burts said he became infected with HIV in 2010 working as a porn performer. Burts said that, like Bay, he had only worked in the industry for a few months before contracting HIV. In his four-month porn career, he said, he contracted chlamydia, gonorrhea and herpes as well.

“To me this is one huge flashback,” Burts said. “What’s the acceptable number of cases of HIV or herpes or HPV or syphilis or any other dangerous STD before people step up and do something about this?”

Another former performer, Darren James, who said he became infected with HIV in 2004 working as a porn performer, said he “almost lost it” listening to Bay tell her story.

“I didn’t want to see a whole army of people sitting at this table,” said James, who now works for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “This industry has failed and continues to fail. We all need to wake up.”

When Bay found out she had HIV on Aug. 21, the Free Speech Coalition, which oversees a database of all adult film performers’ STD tests, placed a moratorium on porn shooting. Six days later, the organization lifted the moratorium.

A week after porn shooting had resumed, Bay’s boyfriend, Daily, announced that he had tested positive for HIV. Two days after Daily said he was HIV-positive, another performer, who wasn’t identified, tested positive. That prompted the Free Speech Coalition to impose a second moratorium.

The Free Speech Coalition announced this week that it would lift the second moratorium on Friday. It also said it will begin requiring STD testing of performers every 14 days, twice as often as before.

The Free Speech Coalition maintains that the three performers who recently tested HIV-positive — Bay, Daily and the anonymous man — did not contract HIV on a film set.

LA voters in November passed a measure mandating condom use in porn, despite a large, coordinated campaign against it by the porn industry. Industry insiders say there has been no enforcement of the new law.

The law was authored by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which maintains that no amount of testing is safe without condom use. “It’s like trying to prevent pregnancy with a pregnancy test,” said foundation communications director Ged Kenslea.

Two new studies out this month suggest the answer is yes, that watching pornography can have a detrimental effect on people's perception of women and reinforce negative stereotypes.

A new study in the Psychology of Women Quarterly shows that both men and women who watch porn are less likely to support affirmative action for women. The study is fascinating because it shows a decrease in support of affirmative action for women over time if people watch porn, even when controlling for political and religious views. The data indicated that "prior pornography viewing predicted subsequent opposition to affirmative action," but "prior opposition to affirmative action did not predict subsequent pornography viewing." This suggests people didn't watch porn that objectified women because they had pre-existing negative attitudes; rather, porn helped develop this negative change in their views of women.

Another study published in the Journal of Communications shows that watching porn correlates to an immediate increase in sexist attitudes, but only in a subgroup of men who are considered low in "agreeableness" (meaning they were generally cold, unfriendly, and hostile). After exposing men and women to hardcore pornography, only men in this subgroup illustrated an increase in sexist attitudes.

The researchers behind this study emphasize that porn does not cause, so much as reinforce, the sexist attitudes apparent in this subgroup. "If these men already have these kinds of beliefs, but they are more dormant, porn appears to prompt these in their conscious minds," Neil Malamuth, a co-author of the study and psychology professor at UCLA, tells Cosmpolitan. "These men already have these tendencies; porn adds fuel to the fire."

However, both of these studies are skirting a key issue: It may not be pornography itself that is the problem, but rather the types of porn people are watching (and using in these experiments).

"I have a real issue when people talk about porn as if it was one big, homogenous mass. It's like talking about literature as just one type," says Cindy Gallop, the founder and CEO of Make Love Not Porn, a website dedicated to promoting more realistic sexual depictions in adult films. Rather than make a "blanket statement" that porn contributes to negative views of women, Gallop "wants people to think more about the landscape of pornography" and consider the "porn about people having a great time in great ways."

Erin Gloria Ryan at Jezebel agrees that the problem may well be the kind of porn people are watching, rather than something inherently bad about pornography. "That viewing certain types of porn causes people to subconsciously look down on women isn't surprising," she writes.

But remember: There is also "feminist porn," adult films that challenge traditional gender roles and provide a lot more control (assuming they don't want to be dominated) to all the performers in it. There is plenty of porn that doesn't subjugate women or portray them solely as vessels of male sexual gratification.

Still, sexist porn is still quite prevalant, and that may be because the porn industry is still mostly led by men. "Any industry that is predominantly driven by men and is targeting men, inevitably produces output that is sexist," Gallop says. "If we had an industry that was 50-50 equal and that was formed, driven, and influenced by women, it would be a different picture."

Nintendo president has died aged 85.

Hiroshi Yamauchi, the Japanese businessman credited with transforming Nintendo into a world-leading video games company, has died aged 85.

Mr Yamauchi ran the firm for 53 years, and was its second-largest shareholder at the time of his death.

The company confirmed the news in an emailed statement.

A spokesman said the firm was in mourning over the "loss of the former Nintendo president Mr Hiroshi Yamauchi, who sadly passed away this morning."

He died of pneumonia at a hospital in central Japan, the company said, adding that a funeral will take place on Sunday.

Mr Yamauchi ran the company from 1949 until 2002.

In that time, he took what was a small-time collectable trading card company and built it into one of the most recognisable - and successful - video games brands today.

"Hiroshi Yamauchi transformed a run-of the-mill trading card company into an entertainment empire in video games," said Ian Livingstone, co-founder of Games Workshop and former chairman of publisher Eidos.

"He understood the social value of play, and economic potential of electronic gaming. Most importantly he steered Nintendo on its own course and was unconcerned by the actions of his competitors. He was a true visionary."

Rob Crossley, associate editor of Computer and Video Games magazine, told the BBC: "You cannot overestimate the influence the man had on the games industry."

"He spearheaded Nintendo as they moved into the arcade business, with hits such as Donkey Kong.

"This man was the president of Nintendo during the NES, the SNES, the N64 and the Gamecube - the first two were transformative pieces of electronic entertainment."

Swaziland's King Mswati III has chosen an 18-year-old beauty pageant contestant as his 14th wife, 

a palace spokesman said Tuesday, days before a much-criticised parliamentary vote.

 

"I can confirm that the king has introduced to the nation a new liphovela (royal fiancee)," said Ludzidzini palace governor Timothy Mtetwa.

 

Mswati, a 45-year-old who is sub-Saharan Africa's last absolute monarch, introduced Sindiswa Dlamini at a Reed Dance celebration over the weekend, Mtetwa told AFP.

 

She wore red feathers on her head -- a sign of royalty.

 

The young woman graduated from Mbabane's St. Francis High School last year and is a finalist in the Miss Cultural Heritage beauty pageant. The winner will be announced on September 28.

 

The king has come under fire for his household's lavish lifestyle while the tiny mountain kingdom's 1.2 million people struggle to make a living.

 

Mswati reportedly has a personal fortune of around $200 million (152 euros) and the UN estimates that 70 percent of his 1.2 million subjects live below the poverty line.

 

RESISTED REFORMS

 

He has steadfastly resisted reforms.

 

The new engagement was announced at a festival which also counted regional delegates who will observe parliamentary elections on Friday.

 

Critics have slammed the polls as a sham, partly because political parties are banned and candidates are hand-picked by traditional leaders.

 

The weekend's celebrations were a smaller repeat of last month's official annual Reed Dance, where young virgins from across the kingdom gather and dance for the king.

 

"It just happened that the international community was there to witness the event," said Mtetwa.

 

The wedding only takes place once the fiancee falls pregnant. Dlamini will then become Mswati's 14th wife.

 

The monarch's colourful private life is off-limits in local media, but has drawn a lot of international interest.

 

Three wives left the household in recent years. The latest, Queen LaGija, fled the palace in 2012 claiming years of physical and emotional abuse.

 

Another queen, LaDube, was reportedly abused after she was caught in bed with the justice minister, a close friend of the king.

 

Mswati had kidnapped and married the queen when she was 16 in 2005.
